SCENATET premieres composer Niels Rønsholdt’s new opera ‘Blik for Blik’ (Gaze For Gaze) in an intimate setup in Pakhus11 in Copenhagen, Denmark, on March 17th-19th 2017.
OPERA TURNED INSIDE OUT
‘Blik for Blik’ is an opera about love, choices and consequences; A story about the nature of the love relation and especially its difficult sides. Composer Niels Rønsholdt’s thematic approach draws musical and textual inspiration from both popular music and the very early opera format. In a prosaic and accessible way, Rønsholdt challenges our common notion of what an opera is and can be. ‘Blik for Blik’ is an in-depth experiment with the opera genre, which, through a minimalistic reconstruction and re-thinking, is almost turned inside out.
The scenography is, like the opera itself, cut to the bone. A comprehensive and nuanced lighting design, which works as a key dramaturgic element, lies like a visual extension of the music. Light with glimpses of dark and dark with glimpses of light is used as concrete visualizations of the story of the opera. We are left with a sharp and refined opera that hits the sensory apparatus from both inside and outside.
‘Blik for Blik’ is performed in an intimate set-up for a limited number of audiences per performance in the raw facilities of Pakhus 11 in Copenhagen. The difference between the stage and the audience is dissolved, and the audience can expect an intimate total experience.
