FAR NORTH is a multidimensional network for the development of contemporary music and theatre in the far north. In 2013 FAR NORTH received a long term networking grant that enabled the development of strengthening the network of artists and organizations that lays the solid foundation of the multifaceted artistic endeavors that continue to spring out of FAR NORTH’s network. Since 2013 FAR NORTH has hosted the DISKOTEK SESSIONS (THE DISKO BAY SESSIONS FOR
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC & THEATRE). Now after years of build up FAR NORTH and the Diskotek Session will morph into the big sister DISKO ARTS FESTIVAL taking place in 2017 under the main title “Utopian Desire”
In August 2017 SCENATET has the pleasure of participating through a one week long residency in Greenland. The ensemble will partake in Project #2 working with Pilkentafel Theaterwerkstatt, Rheinische Kantorei, Kampnagel Hamburg and Goethe Institut. Director of the artistic undertakings will be Peer Ripberger and composer is Arnannguaq Gerstrøm.
The project is titled ‘Added Valeurope Broke Down (So We Go Looking for Utopia in Greenland)’ and it takes it’s departure in the great social and economic conversions happening right now and triggered by the digital revolution.
The image of our future changes more rapidly than ever. But this image is painted by corporations such as Google, Facebook, or Amazon. Their actions are based on trade secrets and indecipherable algorithms as well as on dystopian prophets of the ecological disaster, which will correlate with the end of the fossil age. Thus, it is hardly remarkable that this image turns into one of insecurity, increasing estrangement, and a growing fear within the European population. The result: a conservative protection of vested rights, racism, and the strengthening of right-wing populist parties. Brexit. What is missing: an encouraging vision, that prompts the citizens to design the future instead of fearfully waiting for “the leaden course of history”. A narrative, that grasps different possibilities of the digital revolution in Europe from those that are predominant as yet. And this is what we need to outline, at least in a European, but rather in a cosmopolitan sense.
SCENATET will be involved in the development and the creation of the composition in close collaboration with Arnannguaq Gerstrøm. The production will particularly use the scenic potential of the stage situation to undermine the expected conventions that come with the modus of the concert situation, thus drawing on the special skills of SCENATET.
